Mesa Rim uses the P.L.U.S. Belay system

Climber must VERBALLY verify the following safety check points:
Harness is properly double backed
Climber is tied-in through both the leg and waist straps on harness
Climber is tied in using a Figure-8 follow through knot with 5 parallel pairs of rope
Knot has at least 6 inches of tail or a stopper knot
Belayer must VERBALLY verify the following safety check points:
Harness is properly double backed
Carabiner is through belay loop
Belay carabiner is locked
Rope is properly fed through belay device
If using tube-style device, both rope and belay device are going through carabiner and brake strand points downward/towards dominant hand.
Climber and Belayer should demonstrate proper communication
“On-belay?, Belay-on, Climbing, Climb-on”
Belayer should take slack for the climber using only the “hand-over-hand” or “Pull-Lock-Under-Slide” method
Belayer must not use a shuffle belay whereby the brake hand is slid up the brake strand without the other hand on the brake strand.
Belayer should not allow significant slack to build up between the wall and climber
Belayer must always keep at least one hand (preferably the same hand) on the brake strand at all times
Belayer must keep the brake strand in the locked off position when not taking rope
Belayer should lower climber with both hands on brake strand
To be able to climb at our gym, you have to get Belay Certified using the P.L.U.S. System.
