At Mesa Rim Yoga, we offer a variety of yoga styles for everyone from beginners to advanced students. Here’s a brief overview of the styles our instructors teach, and we encourage you to explore all of them to find the one that speaks to you:
Ashtanga
Ashtanga (also spelled Astanga) means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, which refers to the eight limbs of yoga laid out in the Yoga Sutras of Patajanjali. There are six different Ashtanga series through which a student progresses at his or her own pace. Once students know the order of poses, they may attend self-led, or Mysore style practice. Ashtanga yoga is an extremely popular, vigorous, and athletic style of practice.
Anusara
Founded in 1997 by American yogi John Friend, Anusara means “flowing with grace.” Anusara classes are lighthearted, positive, and fun. They are not easy, however, as they include vinyasa flow and a lot of alignment work. Anusara encourages the use of props making classes accessible to students of differing abilities.
Power
Power Yoga is a general term used in the West to describe a vigorous, fitness-based approach to vinyasa-style yoga. Most power yoga is closely modeled on the Ashtanga style of practice. Unlike Ashtanga, power yoga does not follow a set series of poses. Therefore, any power yoga class can vary widely from the next. What they have in common is an emphasis on strength and flexibility.
Mesa Rim Yoga Center offers all these styles of classes throughout the day, seven days a week!
