Intro to Climbing
GYM TOUR

At Mesa Rim, our dedication to providing amazing spaces starts the moment you walk into any one of our gyms. To help you navigate our space and answer any questions you may have about what we do, all new visitors are offered a tour facilitated by one of our Front Desk Team Members. Tours do not need to be scheduled ahead and will take about fifteen minutes.

Intro to Climbing
BOULDERING ORIENTATION

In the Bouldering Orientation, a Mesa Rim instructor will help to familiarize you with the ins and outs of bouldering, ease your anxiety about trying it out on your own, as well as introduce you to some essential techniques to help navigate our bouldering area including how to fall properly. Orientations do not need to be scheduled ahead and will take about fifteen minutes.  

Duration

  • 15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • All participants must be at least 14 years of age or accompanied by an adult.
  • Reservations can be made online, please arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of the orientation (recommended).
  • Drop-ins are welcome (only if spots are available).

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the differences between rope climbing and bouldering. 
  • Demonstrate proper falling techniques to reduce the risk of injury. 
  • Develop awareness of fall zones when resting in or walking through bouldering areas. 
  • Interpret bouldering grades and placards.
  • Recognize appropriate ways to support other climbers including sharing beta. 
  • Model proper bouldering area etiquette when climbing independently.

BELAY LESSON

Belaying is a fundamental rope work skill that is required to belay independently at Mesa Rim. In the Belay Lesson, you will learn the fundamentals of belaying including how to belay, catch falls, lower a climber, and also how to tie into the rope as the climber.

Prerequisites

  • All participants must be at least 14 years of age.
  • Reservations can be made online (recommended).
  • Drop-ins are welcome (only if spots are available).
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to gear up.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate competency as a belayer in top rope belay scenarios using an Assisted Braking Device (“ABD”). Included in this competency is taking in rope slack using the PLUS method, catching an unannounced fall, and lowering the climber back to the ground. 
  • Demonstrate competency as a climber in top rope belay scenarios. Included in this competency is tying a figure-eight follow-through knot and visually inspecting for correctness. 
  • Identify key components of the harness to ensure correct use and proper fit. 
  • Perform pre-climbing safety checks as both the belayer and climber. 
  • Exhibit correct and efficient use of climbing commands. 
  • Interpret rope climbing placards and grades.
  • Model proper rope climbing etiquette while climbing independently.

LEARN TO CLIMB

Learn to Climb is the perfect starting point for new climbers interested in learning all of the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to feel confident navigating all corners of the gym – on and off the walls! This course covers materials found in our bouldering orientation as well as some basic climbing techniques and route reading skills.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate competency in all Bouldering Orientation Objectives.
  • Identify different types of climbing holds and uses.
  • Understanding of essential climbing gear.
  • Understanding of warming up and cooling down. 
  • Practice body positioning and movement on various holds and climbing terrain. 
  • Apply basic route reading and problem-solving skills.

Intro to Lead Climbing

Intro to Lead Climbing is designed for climbers who feel ready to take their rope climbing skills to the next level. In this course, one of our expert instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of lead climbing and belaying in a safe and supportive environment.

  • 6hrs (two 3hr sessions)

Prerequisites

  • Must be top-rope certified with Mesa Rim.
  • All participants must be at least 14 years of age.
  • Reservations can be made online (recommended).
  • Drop-ins are welcome (only if spots are available).
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to gear up.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize essential safety fundamentals of lead climbing and the associated risks. 
  • Exhibit knowledge of the equipment involved and required for lead climbing.
  • Demonstrate proper lead belaying techniques, including rope management. 
  • Application of proper technique while practicing lead falls as both belayer and climber.
  • Perform various clipping scenarios and safe rope management while climbing. 
  • Communicate effectively as both a climber and a belayer. 
  • Recognize proper lead climbing etiquette in the gym.

INTRO TO CRACK CLIMBING

Intro to Crack Climbing will introduce you to the art of hand jamming, heel-toe camming, and other foundational crack climbing skills. In this introductory course, one of our experienced instructors will guide you through the basics of crack climbing in a supportive environment while utilizing the various cracks built into our climbing walls.

  • 2.5hrs

Prerequisites

  • Participants must be top rope certified through Mesa Rim.
  • All participants must be at least 14 years of age.
  • Reservations can be made online (recommended).
  • Drop-ins are welcome (only if spots are available).
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to gear up.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the basic tenets of crack climbing including the significance of cracks in both indoor and outdoor settings, where cracks can be found in the gym, and foundational crack climbing terminology.
  • Apply basic hand, foot, and body jamming techniques to various-sized cracks in the gym. 
  • Discover intuitive climbing techniques that will help ease of movement while crack climbing. 
  • Identify how crack climbing gear and tape can aid in crack climbing efficiency and also help to reduce pain.

Basics of Movement

This 4-week class is designed to teach climbers the basics of climbing-specific movement. With the support of our experienced coaches, participants will develop a foundational understanding of climbing basics in an environment designed to support their growth. Join us for four weeks of coaching, tailored to the needs of beginner to intermediate climbers.

Duration

  • 6 Hours (four 1.5-hr classes)

Prerequisites

  • This series is suitable for climbers of all levels, but some prior climbing experience is recommended to fully benefit from each session. 
  • Recommended class(es) to take prior: Bouldering Orientation and/or Learn to Climb
  • All participants must be at least 14 years of age.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate effective warming up and cooling down routines.
  • Utilize foundational principles of balance, body positioning, and weight shifting. 
  • Apply the basic footwork techniques of edging and smearing. 
  • Perform the fundamentals of dynamic movement with confidence and control. 
  • Decipher tricky route sequences using problem-solving strategies. 
  • Explore different climbing styles and wall angles with confidence. 
  • Analyze strategies used by other climbers of similar abilities.

Outdoor Approach

Outdoor Approach is designed for the experienced climber who wants to expand their knowledge of climbing to the outdoors. In this course you will learn and practice various systems and techniques involved in anchor building, cleaning anchors, rappelling, and multi-pitch climbing. This course does not cover traditional (trad) anchors, placements, or climbing techniques.

  • 9 hrs (three 3hr classes)

Prerequisites

  • Lead climbing certified at Mesa Rim
  • All participants must be at least 14 years of age
  • A minimum of six (6) months of climbing experience
